Common Misconceptions About Metal Planters and How to Care for Them
Share
Metal planters, including Corten steel planters, are growing in popularity, and it would not be surprising to find them in any horticulturist’s garden. However, there are also numerous misconceptions and misunderstandings about them that may deter others from investing in them.
At Birdies Garden Products, we offer a collection of metal planters that are designed to elevate your outdoor space. In this blog, we will explore common misconceptions about metal planters, separating the truth from the fiction, and discussing how to properly care for them.
Misconception: Metal Planters Causes Plants and Soil to Overheat
As metal conducts heat, people assume that when metal planters are left out in the sun, they can cause the soil and plants to overheat. This is untrue—while the soil’s temperature may rise on warm days, the temperature doesn’t rise too high to affect your plants. While the planter may warm up, it will still be safe to touch.
To prevent your plants from drying up, we suggest properly watering your plants at their required intervals.
Misconception: Metal Planters Have Poor Drainage
Another myth about metal planters is that they do not drain water properly, leaving your plants to drown. Again, this is also untrue—metal planters will either feature drainage holes or be bottomless, allowing the water to drain easily through the soil and out through the bottom/holes.
In fact, we recommend adding mulch to your metal planter so that the soil retains water for longer, keeping your plants hydrated.
Misconception: Metal Planters Require A Lot of Water
While a metal planter can be large, this doesn’t mean that they require significant amounts of water. When using metal planters, especially raised metal beds, choosing the right soil is crucial. For metal planters, we suggest using lightweight soil that is able to retain moisture.
When watering your plants in a metal planter, water the soil and not the leaves or foliage.
