HOW TO PLANT IN TALL PLANTERS
Share
Pots and planters are incredibly popular in today’s garden – and for good reason. They don’t just serve as a place to put our plants but they also provide some stunning visual effects for our backyard, conservatory or patio. The different heights and styles can really create some beautiful rustic or modernistic aesthetics, depending on your tastes.
Tall planters NZ are all the rage at the moment and it’s easy to see why. Tall planters are an excellent way to make your garden stand out, especially if it is a small space. They also look great in a lobby or on a patio, and as they offer a higher air-water ratio they are optimum for plant growth.
Unfortunately, some gardeners feel uncomfortable or intimidated by tall planters. However, they shouldn’t be! Tall planters are easy once you get the hang of them. Below, we talk you through the best ways to use a tall planter.
CHECK FOR DRAINAGE HOLES
We all overwater our plants sometimes, even if we try desperately not to do so. Without drainage holes, the excess water will gather at the bottom of the planter and drown your plant’s roots, potentially causing them to rot. Due to their size, a tall planter should have at least three drainage holes.
If your tall planter doesn’t come with drainage holes then check its material – you may be able to drill some in it.
LINE THE TALL PLANTER
If your tall planter is made of wood or metal then a liner is a good idea to protect it from corrosion. If your planter is made of another material that isn’t so prone to rust or damage, then a liner is optional.
FILL YOUR TALL PLANTER
Fill the bottom of your tall planter with something that will offer elevation and improve drainage. Foam blocks, lava rock and foam beads are common for this job. Styrofoam peanuts are a great space filler too, ensuring that your pot doesn’t have to become too heavy with a large amount of soil. Once you’ve done this, add your soil, ensuring you pick the right kind for the plants you intend to use.
Once you have done this, it’s just a case of choosing your plants, placing the tall planter in an eye-catching position, and letting it shine!
