The Right Height for Raised Garden Beds: Tips and Considerations
Share
Are you wondering what the correct height for raised garden beds is? Well, you have come to the right place.
Here at Birdies Garden Products, we supply a variety of garden beds for sale, including kitset raised garden beds for NZ homeowners.
So, let’s find out what the right height is for raised garden beds!
Considerations
Raised garden beds can come in a range of heights, and the ideal height can depend on what you want to grow. Some raised beds are as tall as 900mm, while others are as short as 150mm.
As a result, before you buy your next raised garden bed, it is important to consider exactly what you plan on growing using it.
150mm to 300mm
Herbs like rosemary, oregano, basil, thyme, sage, and shallow-rooted plants like lavender, spinach, and lettuce, are more suited for raised garden beds that are at least 150mm deep. However, if you plan on growing herbs like parsley and coriander, these belong in a taller (300mm) raised garden bed.
Other plants that are suitable for 300mm+ garden beds include shrubs, perennials, potatoes, peppers, and root crops like beets, carrots, and radishes.
380mm to 460mm
Plants that may require a little bit more soil depth include tomatoes, cucumber, and squash - this is to help them build their structures (considering they are heavy plants!). 400mm to 460mm raised garden beds are regarded as the ideal garden bed height for growing almost everything.
This means that if you are not quite sure on what to grow, a 400mm to 460mm raised garden bed might be the best option!
